Calling all South Australians! We’d love you to join the Beacon Foundation team in Adelaide on 3 March for an important forum to discuss how we can best support SA students to transition successfully from education to employment.

This important Community Forum, facilitated by the ABC’s Deb Tribe, will explore and challenge the way we support our young people in their transition from school life to meaningful employment.
High levels of youth unemployment are of grave concern. With pockets of the state harbouring some of the highest youth unemployment rates in the country, we need to challenge ourselves to ask if we are doing enough to support our youth in their preparation for life after school.
Our community has a responsibility to support young people to successfully transition from education to employment. Schools are often ill-equipped to carry that responsibility alone and the entire community, from schools to training organisations and business, has a role to play. If you believe ‘It takes a whole village to raise a child’, then we need to mobilise support for our youth while they are still at school. A whole community effort will go a long way to avoiding generational cycles of welfare dependency.
Join Bill Lawson AM, Chair of the Beacon Foundation, Zoe Bettison, Minister for Communities and Social Inclusion and Minister for Youth, and other prominent education, community and business leaders in this ‘Q & A’ style forum.
The forum will ask why we have so many unemployed young people. Are we teaching our young people the skills they need to prepare for the world of work? What inspiration, opportunities and experiences are we giving students to explore potential pathways? How do we fulfil the needs of local employers?
Discover the views and ideas of our panellists and explore the role you can play in building a better future for our young people.
We would also welcome your attendance after the forum for refreshments, networking and further discussion. When you register, please take the opportunity to add a question that you would like the panel to consider. We will attempt to cover as many questions as time allows during the panel session.

Schools from across Australia were recognised for excellence in careers curriculum at the Beacon National Conference awards ceremony held on Thursday, April 29 in Sydney.
More than 50 schools were represented at the National Conference, proudly supported by Staples and Holcim Australia, was held in Sydney over two days , with the National Excellence Awards a highlight of the agenda.
A total of 11 awards were presented to schools, students and teaching staff who have displayed consistently high levels of excellence across a broad range of components within the Beacon program.
Beacon CEO Scott Harris paid tribute to all schools within the program for their dedication to helping students on a positive pathway to further education, training or employment once they leave school.
Keynote speakers at the conference, themed ‘Education to Employment: The Next Generation’ included Coca-Cola Amatil Group Managing Director, Alison Watkins; Dr Suzy Green D.Psyc.(Clin.) Founder of The Positivity Institute, Michael McQueen, Social researcher and bestselling author; Ted Noon, Principal of Ashcroft High School in Sydney.

‘Workers’ from across Australia representing a wide range of industries and career paths are registered on eBeacon to be available for a scheduled ‘Career Chat’ with an educator.
Teachers can request a live ‘Career Chat’ to ask any questions they or their students or even parents may have at all regarding specific roles, career pathways, industry practices etc. By accessing experts, teachers can ensure their information is current, accurate and ‘real’!
Teachers may be seeking this information to inform their classroom delivery with real world relevance, or they may require clarification on details of specific industries or jobs, or perhaps answer a question posed by a student.
What do I have to do as a ‘Career Chat’ volunteer?
A time investment of approximately 20 minutes from volunteers will allow teachers and students to get a greater insight into your choice of career via a live informal online chat. The ‘Career Chat’ is as simple as using the typed chat message similar to Skype or Lync messaging, a small investment of time that can easily be done without leaving your desk!

The role will work closely with the Tasmanian State Manager primarily aiming to assist Beacon schools to develop strong relationships with local business connections with the view to increasing educational attainment & creating employment pathways for young people.
The ideal candidate will be a proven team player and have strong relationship management and networking skills, be highly organised, possess the ability to build strategic relationships and display first class communication skills.

The Australian Grand Prix Corporation is proud to partner with The Beacon Foundation to provide work experience opportunities for young students, who are at Beacon Foundation Member schools.
The aim of this program is to provide young people the ability to gain work experience, skills and confidence, as part of a longer term strategy to increase employment opportunities.
The Beacon Foundation has an established track record of inspiring students to either stay in school and increase their educational engagement or to choose a positive pathway that enables successful transition to employment, further education or training.
The Beacon Foundation will identify appropriate placement candidates, and guide them through the application, selection and training process. This is a work experience opportunity, not paid work. It is an opportunity for young people to discover and explore potential career options.
