Success looks different for everyone. Sometimes it’s finding your place.

At Beacon, success isn’t always measured by a single job offer or a straight-line pathway into employment. It’s measured by something deeper and more lasting: the development of skills, mindset and exposure and the confidence that comes from understanding who you are and where you fit in the world.

For many young people, the journey isn’t about landing the first opportunity that comes along. It’s about being given real options, trying them out, and discovering what doesn’t feel right just as much as what does. That process of exploration – of learning, reflecting and recalibrating – is where real success lives.

For Jeremy, the start of the year felt anything but settled.

After moving states, he was still finding his feet. Making new friends, working out where he belonged, and trying to understand what he wanted from the year ahead felt overwhelming. Like many young people, he was searching for direction and for confidence.

Through Beacon’s Work Base Learning Services work, that changed.

By being supported to step into the workforce and make real-world connections, Jeremy began to build more than employability. He built a belief in himself. Confidence grew. Conversations with became easier. The idea that change was possible started to feel real.

Just as importantly, he realised they didn’t have to do it alone.

Through work experience brokered by Beacon, Jeremy was offered an apprenticeship and a job at the Woolstore. On paper, these are strong outcomes, but what matters most is what came next.

Trying different roles helped him work out what he truly enjoyed and what he didn’t. Those experiences provided clarity, not confusion. He discovered a passion for joinery and woodwork, and began to imagine a future that was more creative than he expected.

“I’ve tried quite a few things and it’s helped me work out what I really love doing.”

That’s the power of exposure. Being offered opportunities doesn’t mean you have to take every one, and real success can be realising that something isn’t right for you. That insight is just as valuable as any job offer.

Along the way, Jeremy secured employment through work experience, gained workplace skills and certifications, and developed a clearer understanding of their goals. Next year, they’re heading to college – driven by a desire to build a future that doesn’t feel like living pay cheque to pay cheque, but one that allows for Jeremy to continue to understand the world of work and where he might fit in it.

“I’m where I want to be now.”

For Beacon, this is what successful outcomes look like. Young people who have the skills to navigate the world of work, the mindset to back themselves, and the exposure to make informed choices about their future. Confidence. Self-knowledge. A sense of belonging.

Because finding your place – even if it takes time, trial and change – is success.
